2011 Residents

Sabrina is a poet, playwright and creative who began her career in politics and journalism but realised real life was overrated; she preferred living in her mix of modern fairytales and magical realism. She recently won the Westminster Prize with her first short play, 'That Boy', which was performed at Soho Theatre was included in the critically acclaimed show 'End of the Line'.

Born in Chichester, England, Edward is an artist currently living in London. He graduated from Chelsea College of Art with an MA in fine art. Edward is inspired by the idea of art permeating all aspects of life and he is striving to achieve a position where art and life are indistinguishable.        

Inspired by the application of science and technology in the everyday, Brooke is happiest translating digital images into 3-D objects. She studies what she sees in the hospital, particularly CT scans and surgical techniques. Brooke believes in a close relationship between Science and the Arts.         

Bianca is a graphic designer, art director and part-time teacher based in, London, she works across different media including books, magazines, newspapers and websites. Having a degree in architecture from Sydney University, Bianca achieved a MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martin’s. She has received awards from the New York Type Directors Club, The New York Art Director's Club and the Grafik Design.       

An Italian dancer and choreographer based in London Riccardo began making theatre when he was just 5, and then approached ballet and contemporary dance much later, training at Domenichino da Piacenza. Riccardo then moved to the London Contemporary Dance School and received a danceWEB Scholarship to join Impulstanz, Vienna's international dance festival, and one of the 16 choreographic commissions of The Place Prize.       

Born in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, Jonathan left the north of England for London. He studied Fine Art at the Chelsea School of Art & Design, it was there that Jonathan gained experience in visual arts and the moving image and completed an MA at London Film School. After completing his first short film 'Cotton Stones' in 2009 he completed his second short 'The Good North' a year later which has been selected for competition at 54th BFI London Film Festival 2010.        

Elspeth Brooke is a London-based composer, educator and performer. She studied composition at Cambridge University and at the Royal Academy of Music. Her music has been performed at the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Sadler’s Wells, the Aldeburgh Festival, the Spitalfields Festival, the Al-Bustan Festival and broadcast on BBC Radio 3; by performers including the London Symphony Orchestra, Kuss Quartet, Britten Sinfonia, CoMA, The Clerks’, Exaudi, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Colin Currie, Sarah Nicolls and Oliver Coates.

We are currently reviewing the program and looking at ways to improve on its success of the past few years and reach more people in future.  We're not receiving submissions during this process, but please leave your details so we can get in touch when we have more news.

2010 Residents

Luc is a stage and film director. His work often combines several forms of dramatic storytelling in each project, creating multiple layered and diverse outputs from the same source material. Recent projects in this vein have included an original story inspired by Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, set in the TV studio of The Hospital Club, which produced a film and a live opera experience. He also co-directed a special performance at Buckingham Palace for The Queen, using the story of Romeo and Juliet as inspiration for a cast of actors, opera singers, ballet dancers and pop stars to perform versions of the story made famous in their specific art forms. Luc graduated from the National institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia and has worked with The Royal Opera House, English National Ballet, English National Opera and Young Vic Theatre.

Joel Horwood's burst on to the Edinburgh scene with his joyous first play, a musical entitled Mikey the Pikey which won a Cameron Mackintosh Award. His second piece for Edinburgh, Food, about a troubled celebrity chef played by Sean Campion, won a Fringe First Award.Joel's bittersweet depiction of East Anglian teenagers, I Caught Crabs At Walberswick, toured nationwide after premiering at the HighTide Festival and came to the Bush Theatre for a sell out run.

His ingenious adaptation of Dumas's epic novel The Count of Monte Cristo opened on the mainstage of the West Yorkshire Playhouse in May 2010

Joel's writing skills were put to the test during his project DryWrite Presents: Joel Horwood, a series of short script challenges which he met fantastically well through the performance at The Hospital Club.

Joel is currently under commission with Paines Plough and Northampton Royal and Derngate. He is also writing for Cowboy Films/Channel 4.

Jordan Hodgson and Niall Gallacher are co-founders of House of Jonn, a studio for creative engagement within the city. They studied Architecture at Leeds and Cambridge respectively then together at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2009. They have worked on an array of projects and commissions in the fields of architecture, design, research and visualization. They are currently producing new work for release at the London Festival of Architecture 2011. During CiR they completed a two-week live residency at Selfridges, design for a production of Beethoven's opera 'Fidelio' in a Russian gulag and construction of a new Shoreditch club and event space.
Most recent work includes the production of architectural tableware from a dystopian near-future; visualizations for a literary project by philosopher Alain de Botton.

HoJo’s work has been widely published, most recently in the book ‘Digital Architecture: Passages through

Hinterlands’, and in magazines such as ICON, the Architects’ Journal and Building Design Magazine.

 

Originally from Northern Ireland, 25 year old Dean Quinn moved to London at the age of 18 to study at the prestigious Central Saint Martins where his final collection for his BA Womenswear Degree in 2009 was awarded the school's Womenswear Designer of the Year Award.  His final collection was bought by a number of international stores including Brown's of London and was hailed by The Independent Newspaper as one of the 100 Most Influential Creatives. 

Dean was honored in September 2009 to be included within the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and their “Fashion in Motion” presentation of talent within the British Fashion Industry marking 25 years of London Fashion Week. His collection also sparked the interest of Donatella Versace.

 In early 2010, Dean was approached by Versace to assume the position of full time consultant and designer in Milan, Italy. In September 2011 the Dean Quinn collection was presented during New York Fashion Week, immediately being bought by Barney's NY among others.

Peter Gregson is a cellist and composer. He has performed in Europe and the USA, at venues ranging from Kings Place, London to The Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh; from the Twitter Offices in San Francisco to Le Poisson Rouge, New York. He works Microsoft Labs, UnitedVisualArtists and the MIT Media Lab, and has premiered works by composers such as Steve Reich, Joby Talbot and Tod Machover. Performances highlights for 2012 include a SXSW, Royal Festival Hall, and La Gaite Lyrique, and future collaborators including Pekka Kuusisto, The Britten Sinfonia and Reactify Music.

His debut album, Terminal, from 2010 was met with critical acclaim; a limited edition 10” vinyl of new works by Max Richter and Johann Johannsson was released in 2011.

Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and during 2011/12 acts as the Artistic  Advisor to the Innovation Forum at The New England Conservatory. 

Alex Shepherd graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2009 with a BA Hon's in Photography. Working in a wide variety of mediums including film, sculptural installation and photography, his work explores our sometimes troubled relationship with geometric form. Alex's work often takes a very formal composition, inviting the viewer to study and rethink their conceptions and approach to form. Following the success of his exhibition at the Son Gallery, Peckham, Alex presented his first Solo exhibition Liminal States for The Hospital Club, which examined the opposing forces of life and death, the exhibition tests the relationship between these two definitive elements of existence.

 

Destiny Ekaragha studied Film and Communications at London Metropolitan University, graduating in 2003. Destiny wrote and directed her first short film called Tight Jeans in 2008, the film went on to be officially selected by BFI 52nd London Film Festival, where it was voted best short film by The Observer. TIGHT JEANS went on to be officially selected by the 2008 Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival. It was also voted the best short film shown at the London Film Festival by The Observer newspaper. Destiny has also put together the pilot for Gone too far, a coming of age comedy based in Peckham based on Bola Agbaje's Olivier award winning play.

2009 Residents

Composer Alex is a hugely accomplished musician, impressing at an early age with his first solo piano composition aged seven. He has since received accolades from BBC Proms/Guardian's prestigious Young Composer.

 

Born and raised in Moscow, Alex began composing at the age of 7. He studied piano and composition at Chetham's School of Music and is currently reading music at King's College, London.

Winner of the prestigious BBC/Guardian Composer of the Year award, Alex's passion lies in chamber music and improvisation.

As well as writing in a contemporary classical style, Alex is passionate about electronic music and exploring its potential for combination with classical styles.

Simon’s passion for exploring the moving image in every way –from experimental digital video to high awards and commissions – from Film London, BT film festival, Hypegallery, BBC New Music Shorts amongst others.

Simon’s Projects have included films for Warp Films, BFI Southbank, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Selfridges and the Hospital Club.

He has directed commercials for clients including Energizer/ Wilkinson Sword, Glaxo Smithkline, Masterfoods, Kingfisher and the Scottish Government.
He has been twice nominated for Sharks Young Director award. He has lectured students at St. Martin’s School of Fine Art, on the Process of film and video production.

Nova is a stylist, DJ and designer and graduate from Central Saint Martins with a degree in knitting. After building up a profile on London's fashion scene worked as a stylist for artists including La Roux, Lady gaga, Lovefoxx, Peaches, M.I.A, Kele, The Gossips, Klaxons and Bryan Ferry before launching her own label. The Disco Collection was Nova’s first and was featured in Vogue –Italian and UK, Elle, Harper’s, dazed and i-D. Her second, The Rainbow Collection was displayed in catwalks, combining style and performance.

She is now building her career as a stylist and art director.

Simultaneously, she made a name for herself as one half of the international female DJ-ing duo Lou and Nova (www.LouandNova.com)

Vera Bohl is a multi-disciplinary artist and producer. A Gretch guitar, an MPCs, a classical Sonata or a hidden B-side tune, she’ll pick’n’mash it up, spin it round and sound it out. Working and performing around London’s recording studios and top Clubs, you might catch her performing along Boy George at one of Pam Hogg’s legendary Parties, on a Honkey Tonk piano at the Blues Bar or on a Steinway in Chelsea with Prince William.

In 2010 Vera recorded her Spaghetti Western inspired EP in Nigel Godrich’s Studio at the Hospital Club, and has gone on working with Producer P’Nut (Faithless, Amy Winehouse). This year one of her Disco inspired Songs will be featured on the upcoming Dido record.

She has collaborated with Nick Knight’s Showstudio and is currently developing her sound installation performance ‘Opus Sensus Corpus’.

She has set up her own creative agency www.studio-week.com, creating cutting edge Audio Visual Productions and is now managing the Hospital Clubs CIR program together with Eilsh Quinn, Director of Philanthropy

Director Lisa trained at LAMDA and The National Tehatre Studio, and has worked with some of the most important theatrical talents, and directed leading theatre companies in London and across the Atlantic. She set up her own theatre company Buckle for Dust in 2008, and is an Affiliate Artist at Theatre 503.

Lisa is currently directing Michael Frayn's rarely performed play 'Here' at the Rose Theatre in Kingston with Alison Steadman, Zawe Ashton and Alex Beckett. 

The graphic design duo and founders of EatSleepWork/Play, met at Central St Martins whilst studying BA Graphic Design. Proving great minds think alike, they have worked on a range of projects and freelance commissions for Adidas, fashion design talents Gareth Pugh and Kokon, VH1 and Pepsi, as well as design commissions and art direction for Modular Records, BoomBox and MAC.

French artist Roxane has exhibited widely across Europe, with shows in paris at The Fondation Cartier, Fondation d'entreprise Ricard, Berendsen Galerie, Galerie HO and Galerie Philippe Samuel. In 2010 she completed a residence at the Duende Guest Studios, Rotterdam. Off the back of her residency at The Hospital Club, she is now represented by Galerie Emmanuel Hervé.
