What Are You Up To?

Susie Stone

There are lots of you asking about your fellow members and we've had great feedback on this section in the magazine. So, we've decided to enrich your lives with even more information about your fellow members.

If you'd like to submit your details for a feature profile, why not contact  membership@thehospitalclub.com for your list of questions...

Starting us off is Susie Stone, who works in the fashion industry, specifically bespoke women's wear.

So who are you then?  What do you do?

Having grown up surrounded by fashion (both my parents worked in retail) I spent my childhood making and designing clothes. This being the late 80’s/early 90’s that included gold lamé dresses and voluminous pastel dungarees...

Despite this vocational drive with all things fashion I decided to study Fine Art at University, specialising in photography and large scale sculpture and graduated with 1st class honours.

Fun as this was, my heart was still pining for the heady rush of a sewing machine and the allure of silk doupion, so soon after I graduated I began my own business making bespoke women’s wear.

I have been building a loyal client base over the past 2 years (often meeting at The Hospital Club) and am about to open my first boutique on Bermondsey Street.

What are you current working on?

The biggest project I am working on at the moment is the launch of my first boutique on Bermondsey Street.

I have spent the past year looking for the perfect space and I love the area. I am opposite the Fashion Textiles Museum and almost every other shop on the street is independent or artisan in some way.

I want my new boutique to allow women to explore what shapes really work for them and find the inner style icon that we all have inside us. What you wear every day is integral to how you feel and how you then carry yourself, so a perfectly fitted garment is the ideal starting point.

I believe that when you choose every element of a garment to your personal taste, and have it made to fit you perfectly, it changes the way you wear clothes. Investing in a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are, made with quality materials, automatically imbues the wearer with a dignity and sophistication impossible when wearing off the peg or cheaply made clothes.

What does the future hold for you?

I am at the start of an exciting new chapter with my business and want to see my brand grow so that I can promote the joys of bespoke women’s wear. I think it is important to encourage people to express their own style and having something made to measure should be an option more women have available to them.

Opening my new studio is the beginning of this journey as I will be holding a series of events to showcase my work and to spreading the ‘Susie Stone’ word!

So, tell us something personal about you.

I have a minor obsession with Grace Kelly. High Society is my favourite film of all time and her wardrobe in that film almost brings me to tears. In fact all the costumes (for both the male and female cast) are absolutely breathtaking.

Where can we normally find you in the Club?

Looking at fabric swatches or drawing in my sketch book in The Martini Lounge (Tommy’s Margarita optional...)
