Meet Mono Club, an Indie Psych/Alt Pop band from London. Their debut single, Sky High and Submarine, was selected for the BBC 6 Music playlist. Steve Lamacq has described them as one of his favourite new bands and they have received widespread support across BBC 6 Music, Radio X, WFUV New York and 8Radio Ireland. To promote the single they recently performed for Sadiq Khan in Trafalgar Square as part of #LondonIsOpen campaign and also played a live Facebook session for Buzzfeed. Their debut album of the same title was mixed by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, Roger Daltry, Wilko Johnson) and will be released on LGM Records in early 2017. So, we are delighted to welcome them to play at our next h.Club Live session with Darling BOY on 25th November and caught up with the band ahead of the show.
Describe your sound?
Tight and tidy.
How many different languages can you say ‘Mono’ in?
One, Greek (of course!)
Do you need to speak Greek to become part of your club?
No, you will need a C in maths at GCSE (or equivalent)
Tell us about Sky High and Submarine – what’s the song about and what inspired you to write it?
It's about the ever cyclical world of up and down, left and right and forward and back. There is no sky high without the submarine.
How long has the debut single been in the making?
The title Sky High and Submarine had been knocking about for ages and we wanted to make it into a song. We had this riff that we used to play over and over wondering where it would go. The music started to come together pretty quickly when the interweaving guitar and bass lines were written around that main riff and suddenly the song had a real energy and momentum that meant it more or less wrote itself.
What’s next for Mono Club and what plans do you have for 2017 and beyond?
We'll have single out in the new year and an album following in early spring!
2016 has obviously been a great year for you guys?
For us it has yeah. But let's just erase 2016 shall we?
Mono Club are performing at h.Club Live with Darling BOY on Friday 25th November. Tickets are available here.
