emaé is a pop-soul, Scottish born songstress living in London. With international appeal, her feel-good music has been featured on BBC Introducing, MTV The Alternative Wrap Up and VEVO amongst many others and playlisted by Spotify from Japan and Indonesia. Chosen as #OneToWatch by the MOBOs in 2017 and described as the same by Gary Crowley (BBC Introducing), this year promises to be an exciting one for emaé, her music already reaching 55 countries around the world.
Having just released her debut album Old Heart in June 2018, emaé executively produced the record, which was mixed by Mark Allaway (Jess Glynne, The XX, Newton Faulkner) and mastered by Chris Lewis (Traci Braxton, Incognito).
We caught up with emaé as she prepares for her headline show in the Oak Room.
Describe your sound in an alternative way?
Music you can live your life to.
Why Old Heart?
Because I love nostalgia, it’s a top class feeling. I also love the idea of a heart that has been passed down from one generation to the next, I don’t know, that speaks to me.
What can we expect from the show?
A good time. The story behind the music, and hopefully we’ll all leave feeling like we know each other, music does that.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you want to be?
An elite athlete.
What's one thing you'll never forget?
One time my family travelled by bus from Zimbabwe to Botswana, it took forever to cross the border so I put my bag down on the ground and slept under the stars on the side of the road while we waited. Pretty sure I saw a shooting star that night too, like really.
Made for TV Christmas movies.
How many languages can you speak?
What’s next for emaé in 2018 and beyond?
A project involving my songs, a live orchestra, the h Club and a big dream. Plus a couple of singles along the way!
Describe this album process in one sentence?
A labour of love, a self-expression and a must.
emaé is performing at h Club Live with special guests on Friday 3rd August, book in through the members' section.
